Balboa Weekend Workshop

Balboa Weekend Workshop

Us Tuxedo Cats are so excited to announce that we’re hosting a Balboa Weekend Workshop on March 21st & 22nd!

Balboa (or “Bal”) is a style of swing that developed alongside big band music on the West Coast of California. The dance is known for its close-embrace and fun footwork suitable for all tempos.

We’re thrilled to have Eloise and Cedric sharing their love of Bal with our community and leading classes throughout the weekend.

Bal isn’t often taught in Calgary, which makes this a special opportunity to learn and build a stronger dance community!

Whether you’re brand new to Bal or looking to brush up and refine your basics, this weekend is for you. All classes are beginner-friendly and open to everyone! It’s also a perfect chance to explore the opposite role in a supportive environment.

In addition to the classes over the weekend, we will also be hosting a DJ’d social dance Saturday evening & Sunday afternoon!

Find schedule & pricing information here!

Swingvolution

Get Ready for  Swingvolution April 17 & 18, 2026!

Swingvolution is Lethbridge's Annual 1 Day Workshop & Exchange! We'll feature a full day of great classes from great instructors, and 2 nights of social dancing with live music!

In the world of swing dancing, finding high-quality workshops tailored for early skill dancers can be a challenge. As events grow, they often attract top-tier talent and higher registration costs, making it intimidating for newer dancers.

We believe there's more than enough talent and passion for lindy hop, balboa, charleston, shag, blues (& more!) right here in the prairies, waiting to be shared with everyone.

Our goal is simple: keep things affordable, accessible, and community‑rooted. Familiar teachers know our dancers, our scenes, and how to guide us on our swing dance journey.

This one‑day workshop welcomes dancers from across the prairies, not just Lethbridge. We can’t wait to share our community, our hospitality, and a full day of learning and joy.

Open Practice: Blues

We’re starting a new initiative to provide monthly open practices to create a welcoming space for all dancers to meet, practice, and share ideas.

Our open practice sessions are held on the second and fourth Saturday’s of the month, each with a focus on has a focus on Blues or Swing (Lindy/Charleston/Balboa). These sessions will take place at UniverseSoul Dance Studio (small studio)!

No need to come with a partner, it is open to dancers of all levels, whether you take classes with us or not.

These practices have a pay-what-you-can model, with a suggested donation of $5. Feel free to give more if you’d like to support the space and our community!

What to expect at these sessions:

  • This does not have the same structure as a class. Come with an open mind or specific ideas you want to work on. This is a chance to dance, experiment, and practice at your own pace.

  • Experienced dancers will be around and may be open to offer feedback, tips, and guidance as you explore, but do not expect them to teach you anything new.

  • The studio is small, so please practice good floor craft and be mindful of space and others while moving around. Both leads and follows are responsible for this. Accidents happen, be sure to apologize and check in with others.

  • Please ensure to bring clean indoor shoes to wear in the studio.

You’ll learn a range of movements and ideas that help you feel at home on any blues dance floor, no matter the tempo or vibe. We’ll focus on building connection, comfort in your body, and the confidence to express yourself within the music.
